Final preparations: the walk

The teaching program is technically completed. Happens? With a little luck. If I didn’t, that’s absolutely NONE of my business.

I just finished weighing my gear on a gram scale, WHO IS SHE?! The backpack weighs just under 19 pounds and I’m pretty excited about it! I can imagine Sigrid in 2024 without any experience being impressed and that’s all that matters right now!

Now the plan is to clean the apartment, organize all the bicycles and bags, say goodbye to colleagues and friends. and then fly to Kerikeri. Easy? I’m not stressed, you are stressed.

From Kerikeri, I will meet up with a good friend and we will begin our journey north (and more or less west)! Intercity buses can take us to Kaitaia and from there we will probably spend the night unless we magically get a ride to Northern Terminus on the same day. From there, we will begin the hike in Cape Reigna starting at 90 Mile Beach.

Extra sunscreen is included specifically for the first leg (anyone worried about my propensity for sunburn), because the New Zealand sun is RELENTLESS.

I think I’m pretty stocked up on food on this first leg too! I even went and bought water bottles at New World (my favorite grocery store) to make sure they fit my water filter (Sawyer Squeeze).

Less than a week left until the trip begins!

Be fun, be careful.
