AIFF Super Cup qualification scenarios: How can Kerala Blasters, Mumbai City and Rajasthan United qualify from Group D?

Rajasthan United opened up the semi-final race in Group D in the AIFF Super Cup when Robinson Blandon scored the winner against Mumbai City FC to complete the first win of the competition for an I-League side.

Instead of favorites, Mumbai City and Kerala Blasters, from Group C, Rajasthan are miraculously in the race for the last four. However, the calculations are very contrived, but there is still little chance that Vikrant Sharma’s side can continue their impressive run.

Group D points table

Position Teams Member of Parliament wins Pulls To lose G.F GO GD Points
1 Kerala blasters 2 2 0 0 4 0 4 6
2 Rajasthan United 2 1 0 1 1 1 0 3
3 Mumbai City F.C 2 1 0 1 4 2 2 3
4 Delhi Sports Club 2 0 0 2 1 7 -6 0

Result criteria for teams with equal points:

Rajasthan United will remain in the reckoning only if it beats Sporting Club Delhi and Mumbai City beats Kerala Blasters. Then all three teams – Rajasthan, Blasters and Mumbai City – are level (six each). The winner will then be determined based on the following criteria:

– Head-to-head points between the three teams

– Head-to-Head goal difference between the three teams

– Head-to-Head goals scored by the three teams

The above criteria will be used until three teams are reduced to two or the winner is determined. If the winner is still uncertain, the entire group will be assessed using the following criteria:

– Goal difference

– Goals scored

This ideally limits the teams in two and even if the teams are not separated, they will compete in a penalty shootout for a qualifying match.

Team specific scenarios:

How can Kerala Blasters qualify?

For the Blasters to qualify, the math is simple: avoid losing. If it loses against Mumbai City, it’s over.

How can Mumbai City qualify?

If Mumbai City beats Kerala Blasters and Rajasthan loses points, Mumbai will qualify due to its superior H2H record against Blasters.

If Mumbai City win, along with Rajasthan, which will result in a three-way tie for first place, Mumbai would need a margin of victory of more than one goal to guarantee qualification.

The current goal difference between three teams in the mini table:

Kerala Blasters: +1

Mumbai City: -1

Rajasthan United: 0

MCFC can even go 1-0 if Rajasthan wins the match against Delhi, provided that Rajasthan wins by less than four goals.

How can Rajasthan United qualify?

Rajasthan United will have to beat Sporting Delhi by at least four goals, provided Mumbai City beats Kerala Blasters 1-0. If Kerala Blasters score despite losing, Rajasthan will be out.
