Several top Indian footballers have expressed their concerns about the impasse surrounding the start of the country’s top division, the Indian Super League (ISL).
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) have failed to agree on a Master Rights Agreement (MRA), which expires in December 2025. As a result, the ISL, the pinnacle of men’s football, has been left in limbo.
Indian internationals Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, Rahul Bheke and Lallianzuala Chhangte were among those who issued a joint statement, urging the authorities charged with running the sport to seek a quick resolution from the ISL.
«Simply put, we want to play, and now. This is a plea to everyone involved in the running of our sport in the country, to do whatever it takes to get the football season going. India needs its competitive football now more than ever.»
“Our anger, frustration and sadness have now been replaced by despair. Desperation to play the game we love, in front of people who mean the world to us, our families and our fans.

«As for us, we remain committed, professional and ready to walk out of that tunnel onto the field as soon as we are told we can. All we ask of those who lead our beautiful game is to match our desperation with honest intentions. We have been in a very dark tunnel for a long time. We could use some light,» the statement said.
Three clubs – Kerala Blasters, Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Odisha FC – have all suspended their activities due to the uncertainty of the competition.
Blasters captain Adrian Luna stated that football in India is now facing an ‘existential crisis’.
«The time for demands is long gone, patience has given way to fear and livelihoods are at stake. For the sake of all of us who are anchored in Indian football, we need immediate action and solutions. We need the fans to come together to demand answers, and we need that NOW, before it is too late. The clock is ticking,» the Uruguayan wrote. Instagram.
The AIFF did not receive any bidders to respond to the tender for commercial partner rights by the November 7 deadline.
Despite investor interest, they have reportedly shied away from becoming the ISL’s commercial partner due to the lack of representation on the league’s governing council.
