Women’s Champions League: Real Madrid saves draw against Paris FC; Chelsea beats St. Polten

Caroline Weir scored a dramatic late goal for Real Madrid on Tuesday to rescue a 1-1 draw against Paris FC in the Women’s Champions League as Lyon defeated fellow heavyweight Wolfsburg 3-1.

Weir scored in the eighth minute of stoppage time (it should have only been six) to deny Paris another win in Madrid, as the visitor desperately tried to hold on after Lorena Azzaro scored a penalty before half-time.

The French team had won 1-0 from a penalty in 2023, when they recorded home and away wins against the Spanish club.

Norwegian star Ada Hegerberg scored twice in Lyon’s win, while Catarina Macario and Sam Kerr both netted twice in Chelsea’s 6-0 defeat to tournament debutants St. Polten. Wieke Kaptein and an own goal from Lisa Ebert completed the score in Austria.

Earlier, Norwegian club Valerenga defeated Roma 1-0 for their first win in the competition.

The Spanish side dominated the opening half-hour as Linda Caicedo hit the crossbar after working her way through a host of defenders, and goalkeeper Mylène Chavas denied Naomie Feller’s effort.

But Filippa Angeldahl was penalized for a foul on substitute Sheika Scott and Azzaro sent Paris’ penalty in the 41st.

Frustration grew for the home side as the pressure in the second half failed to yield results, with Caicedo scoring a good save from Chavas, who went on to make more stops. Goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez was shown a yellow card after complaining about a questionable referee’s decision.

Weir finally had a chance at the last minute when she squeezed the ball past the otherwise flawless Chavas.

Hegerberg scored two goals five minutes apart in the first half, and team captain Wendie Renard scored a penalty as eight-time champions Lyon spurned Wolfsburg’s challenge by dominating from start to finish in the teams’ 11th meeting.

Lineth Beerensteyn provided the consolation for the German team.

It was Lyon’s seventh consecutive victory over Wolfsburg. Renard, who played in all their previous meetings, became the first player to reach 100 wins in UEFA club competitions.

Hegerberg extended her record as the competition’s top scorer, taking her total to 69 goals.

Stine Bracken scored and Vålerenga held on to celebrate an unprecedented win for the Rome club.

Roma made the better start before the visitor’s confidence grew, with Sara Hørte hitting the post with a deflected header in the 34th minute.

Bracken, a 20-year-old midfielder, scored six minutes later when she evaded a defender with a clever turn and surged forward past more static defenders before firing the ball into the top left corner.
