European football’s governing body UEFA has apologized after forcibly removing videos of Scottish fans celebrating the team qualifying for the World Cup from social media due to copyright infringement.
The Scottish Football Supporters Association (SFSA) received email messages from UEFA stating that it had shared footage without permission with TV coverage of Scotland’s 4-2 World Cup qualifying victory against Denmark on X.
UEFA, which owns the broadcast rights to the match, told the BBC through a spokesperson on Friday: “It appears that the relevant content has been wrongly picked up by our content protection agencies.
“We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused and thank you for your understanding.”
The posts showed fans from across the country celebrating Tuesday’s match, which saw Scotland secure a World Cup spot for the first time since 1998. The SFSA’s X account was subsequently blocked.
