Newcastle United winger Harvey Barnes scored two goals in seven minutes as his side recorded a thrilling 2-1 home win over Manchester City on Saturday to stop the visitor from closing the gap on Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.
As City’s Erling Haaland chased his 100th Premier League goal, both sides missed a host of chances in a scoreless first half. Barnes wasted one in the opening minute after Newcastle won the ball high up the pitch.
City coach Pep Guardiola was furious when Newcastle defender Fabian Schaer let his foot in as City striker Phil Foden shot wide, but no penalty was awarded.
AS IT HAPPENED: NEW vs. MCI Highlights
As the match boiled from start to finish, Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade was twice denied by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Barnes missed an open goal, much to the dismay of the home fans.
He made amends as the game came alive just after the hour mark, but collected Bruno Guimaraes’ ball on the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot to the foot of the left post.
However, the visitor did not stay behind for long. Ruben Dias equalized five minutes later with a deflected drive after Newcastle failed to clear a corner.
After a disappointing start to the season, home fans may have feared another collapse, but Barnes was quickest to react after Bruno Guimaraes headed against the crossbar two minutes later to put Newcastle back in front.
Newcastle defended superbly for more than eight minutes of stoppage time and held on to win, finishing in fourteenth place with 15 points.
Arsenal, who play Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, top the standings with 26 points, four points ahead of fourth-placed City, who have played a game more.
