Napoli secured a 2-0 home win over Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday, with a Scott McTominay header and an own goal against the resilient visitor, with the goalkeeper denying Rasmus Hojlund’s penalty after a series of fine saves.
After an even, goalless first half, Napoli were awarded a penalty, which Mateusz Kochalski saved in the 56th minute, but McTominay opened the scoring from a corner nine minutes later.
Napoli piled on and in the 72nd minute McTominay’s bicycle kick attempt was turned into his own net by Qarabag’s Marko Jankovic, whose mistake had led to the earlier penalty, and the Azerbaijani side failed to respond.
Both sides are on seven points, with Qarabag 16th in the league stage standings and Napoli 18th.
Juventus beats Bodo/Glimt
Juventus substitute Jonathan David scored an injury-time goal to give his side a 3-2 Champions League win over Norway’s Bodo/Glimt inside the Arctic Circle on Tuesday, as the Italians picked up their first win in this season’s competition.
With Giorgio Chiellini and Damien Comolli almost missing the match after their plane was diverted to Sweden due to snow, the home side started well and took the lead midway through the first half through Ole Didrik Blomberg.
Juventus came back three minutes after the break, equalized through Lois Openda and took the lead shortly afterwards thanks to a Weston McKennie header, with Fabio Miretti also having an effort disallowed for offside in that period.
Sondre Fet scored a late equalizer from the penalty spot for Bodo, but Juventus took the win when David scored in the first minute of stoppage time to lift the Italians to 21st in the 36-team standings.
Bodo is 31st in the rankings with two points.
Dortmund beats Villarreal
Borussia Dortmund ended a three-match winless run on Tuesday with a decisive 4-0 victory over 10-man Villarreal in the Champions League, made possible by a Serhou Guirassy double.
The Guinean striker broke the deadlock in injury time before half-time by heading home from a corner and made it 2-0 in the 54th minute.
Villarreal’s Juan Foyth was sent off for handling a Karim Adeyemi goal, awarding a penalty. Although Guirassy’s initial effort from the spot was saved by ‘keeper Luiz Junior, the attacker reacted quickest and fired in the rebound.
Three minutes later, Dortmund added a third goal through Adeyemi from the penalty area, while Daniel Svensson completed the victory with a header from the final move of the match.
The result moved Dortmund to fourth in the standings with 10 points from five games, level with Chelsea and Manchester City. Villarreal, meanwhile, are third from bottom with one point.
Slavia Prague and Athletic Bilbao play a goalless draw
Slavia Prague and Athletic Bilbao managed to draw 0-0 in a tightly defended Champions League match on Tuesday, with both teams languishing in the competition’s elimination zone.
Both teams created chances in a stop-start match marred by numerous fouls, but the visiting side came closest to breaking the deadlock when Robert Navarro missed three solid chances in quick succession after the restart.
Athletic also created the best chance of the opening period when Oihan Sancet’s strike from the center of the penalty area was parried away by Slavia goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek.
The visiting side upped the tempo after the restart, with Navarro testing Stanek with a low drive before forcing the Slavia keeper into a few last-ditch saves.
Slavia, looking for their first win in Europe, had a big chance late in the second half when defender Stepan Chaloupek sent a shot from close range over the crossbar with an open goal in front of him.
