Germany will host the Women’s European Championship in 2029.
UEFA voted in favor of Germany’s bid on Wednesday in a three-way contest, opting for the promise of record revenues and attendances with the national team playing in sold-out stadiums in Munich and Dortmund.
Germany’s eight-city project for the anticipated Women’s European Championship with 16 teams and 31 matches beat Poland and a co-hosting bid from Denmark and Sweden.
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin said it was “heartbreaking” that one of the three bids would be lost before taking Germany’s name out of the envelope to announce the winner.
A large delegation from the German federation posed for team photos at UEFA headquarters before all donning white national team jerseys with the number 29 on the front.
Switzerland set a tournament record as host of the 2025 European Championship in July, with a total crowd of more than 650,000, with an average of 21,000 per match.
Germany also expects to attract more than a million spectators to the stadiums in Cologne, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, Leipzig and Wolfsburg.
A German-hosted Women’s Euros can aim to turn a profit after UEFA budgeted to subsidize the Swiss-hosted tournament with 25 million euros ($29.1 million).
