AIFF Super Cup 2025 semi-final: FC Goa’s Guarrotxena gets red card in tunnel before kick-off against Mumbai City

In what appears to be an unprecedented event in Indian football, FC Goa captain Iker Guarrotxena was shown a red card in the tunnel ahead of the AIFF Super Cup semi-final kick-off against Mumbai City FC on Thursday.

The Indian Super League teams were preparing to leave the tunnel of the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa, when the Spaniard was reportedly asked to change the inside of his shorts, which were a different color than others.

«There was a disagreement in the tunnel, possibly against the match officials, after which Goa decided to replace him in the starting XI. In the meantime, he has been officially sent off and has a red card to his name. Therefore, he is not part of the match squad,» the commentators confirmed.

Guarrotxena was then replaced in the starting line-up by compatriot Javier Siverio and Borja Herrera was given the captain’s armband.

FC Goa and Mumbai City FC face each other for the first time in the Super Cup as they clinch a spot in the final, where East Bengal awaits after the Red and Golden Brigade defeated Punjab FC 3-1 in the other semi-final earlier in the day.
