Tottenham Hotspur maintained its strong Champions League home form on Tuesday with a 3-0 win against Slavia Prague, thanks to an own goal, and penalties for Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons.
The London club had to work hard from the visiting team, but eventually managed to achieve a third victory on home turf this year, boosting their hopes of a place in the top eight.
Thomas Frank’s boys took the lead in the 26th minute when Pedro Porro’s corner was headed into his own net by David Zima without any real pressure.
Porro was involved again five minutes after the restart when he was brought down in the penalty area by Youssoupha Sanyang and Kudus calmly beat Jindrich Stanek from the spot.
Simons, who scored his first goal for Tottenham this weekend, was then brought down in the penalty area by Igoh Ogbu in the 78th minute and the resulting penalty tucked away.
The win moved Tottenham provisionally to ninth in the 36-team standings with 11 points from six games, although they could drop lower after Wednesday’s games.
Slavia were smooth on the ball and created some good chances, but remain on three points and face an uphill battle in the last two games to get into the play-off positions.
Tottenham great Son Heung-min, who left the club in the summer after being part of the Europa League-winning squad, was welcomed back for a pre-match walk-on.
The South Korean striker scored 173 goals during his Tottenham career and was sorely missed at times during a difficult start to Frank’s reign in north London.
But there are signs that Tottenham are starting to gel, especially in attack, with the likes of Kudus and Simons starting to deliver results.
Tottenham took a 22-game unbeaten home run in Europe in Tuesday’s match and almost got the perfect start when Wilson Odobert’s cross was met by Richarlison, but his close-range effort was somehow kept out by Slavia keeper Stanek.
Slavia also had chances, with the lively Lukas Provod forcing Guglielmo Vicario into action while Michal Sadilek also had the chance to draw the visiting team level.
Tottenham doubled their lead when a wild tackle from Sanyang allowed Kudus to score his third goal for the club. Simons then took action and doubled his goal tally for Tottenham.
With the top eight automatically progressing to the last 16, Tottenham still have plenty of work to do with a home match against Borussia Dortmund and an away match against Eintracht Frankfurt in January completing the group matches.
