Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers scored a double as the visitor twice came from behind to win 3-2 at West Ham United to stay in the thick of the 2025/26 Premier League title race on Sunday.
Villa conceded after 29 seconds when Mateus Fernandes punished Ezri Konsa’s mistake and the away side trailed 2-1 at half-time before Rogers took matters into his own hands.
The England midfielder scored the equalizer five minutes after half-time, blasting a late dip past goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to seal the points.
Villa had canceled out West Ham’s early opener in the 10th minute when defender Konstantinos Mavropanos was credited with an own goal, but Jarrod Bowen put the hosts back in front.
Bowen thought he had given West Ham the lead again, but his effort was ruled out for offside.

The win took third-placed Villa to 33 points from 16 games, three behind leaders Arsenal, while West Ham’s sixth home defeat of the season left them third from bottom with 13 points and in danger of spending Christmas in the relegation zone.
Sunderland passes Newcastle United
Sunderland beat Newcastle United 1-0 thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Nick Woltemade as the north-east rivals met for the first time in almost a decade.
The match is one of the fiercest clashes in English football and fans following Sunderland’s promotion were treated to an entertaining encounter with Woltemade scoring only the second own goal in the Wear-Tyne derby in the Premier League.
After a goalless opening half, which saw Newcastle’s Dan Burn left the field with a chest injury and taken to hospital, Woltemade gave Sunderland a minute’s lead in the second half when his header flew into his own net.
Newcastle struggled in attack and barely caused any problems in Sunderland’s penalty area as the hosts took the points to remain unbeaten at home and move up to seventh, level on 26 points with sixth-placed Liverpool, while Newcastle are 12th on 22.
