Age is just a number: the 58-year-old ‘King Kazu’ of Japan continues to play football

58-year-old Evergreen forward Kazuyoshi Miura will join a Japanese third division team to begin his 41st season as a professional footballer, local media reported on Sunday.

Miura, known as ‘King Kazu’, is on loan at Fukushima United for a year after spending last season at fourth-tier Atletico Suzuka.

The signing is not yet official, but Miura’s recent moves are usually announced on January 11 at 11:11 a.m., in a nod to his squad number.

The former Japan international will turn 59 in February.

Last season he played seven games for Suzuka, who were relegated to Japan’s regional leagues after finishing in second place and losing a play-off.

Miura made his professional debut in 1986 for Brazilian side Santos and also played for teams in Italy, Croatia, Australia and Portugal.

He helped put football on the map in Japan when the professional J. League was launched in 1993.

He made his Japan debut in 1990 but was famously left out of the squad for their first World Cup final in 1998, despite scoring 55 goals in 89 games for the national side.
