Sons of Diogo Jota join the mascots for the match between Liverpool and Wolves at Anfield

Diogo Jota’s sons will join the mascots at Anfield on Saturday during the Premier League match between Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers.

According to one report in The Times, Jota’s sons – Dinis and Duarte – will guide the starting line-ups of the two clubs where Portuguese Jota played club football in England.

28-year-old Jota and his brother Andre Silva died in a car accident in northwest Spain in July.

Saturday’s match will be the first meeting between the two clubs since Jota’s death.

Fans from both clubs had paid heartfelt tributes to Jota at their respective season openers in August, which were also attended by Jota’s wife Rute Cardoso and her two sons. Wolves supporters unveiled a tifo dedicated to former striker Jota ahead of the match against Manchester City at Molineux. The tifo depicted Jota celebrating a goal for Wolves, along with the words ‘We’ll Remember You When You Walk In Fields Of Gold’.

Jota joined Wolves on loan from Atletico Madrid in 2017 and made a permanent move to the club the following year. He then signed a five-year contract with Liverpool in 2020, where he won the league title earlier this year.

Wolves fans also held a round of applause in the 18th minute of the match in memory of the squad number Jota wore at the club.

Before reigning Premier League champions Liverpool played their first match against Bournemouth, a minute’s silence was observed around Anfield. Liverpool fans also paid a moving tribute to their former number 20, equipping themselves with red and white signs to spell out ‘DJ20’ and ‘AS30’ in honor of Jota and Silva during the moment of silence. Fans also provided an emotional rendition of Liverpool’s famous song, You’ll Never Walk Alone, as the two players lined up, giving a round of applause after the twentieth minute.
