Barcelona manager Hansi Flick on Friday backed Joan Garcia to overcome hostility in this weekend’s derby at Espanyol – the goalkeeper’s first return to the Spanish giants’ city rivals since his summer move.
The 24-year-old shot-stopper infuriated Espanyol fans after joining their illustrious local rivals for around €26 million in June.
A fiery atmosphere is expected on Garcia’s return to the RCDE Stadium on Saturday, where a win would temporarily move the defending La Liga champions seven points clear of Real Madrid at the top.
Espanyol has stepped up security at the game, installing a net behind both goals to prevent objects being thrown at players and banning entry to fans wearing or wearing Barcelona symbols.
Asked about the possible impact on Garcia, who has cemented his status as Barcelona’s number one goalkeeper since his arrival, Flick told reporters he had «no concerns» about his player.
«He has the confidence, you believe in his strengths and in his quality, and this is what he wants to show: tomorrow is the best way to do that,» the German coach said.
«He is always focused on the situation, and you can see that. He played a fantastic six months here in Barcelona, he showed why the decision (to sign him) was right.»
This Barcelona derby, a usually one-sided match that Espanyol has not won at home in La Liga since 2007, promises to be an exciting match.
Espanyol – who narrowly escaped relegation last year – are having one of their best seasons in living memory and are in fifth place after winning their last five league matches.
Flick congratulated his counterpart Manolo Gonzalez and said Barcelona would have to “play at our best level” to triumph.
