Strasbourg’s Rosenior is cautious about Chelsea’s speculation

Strasbourg coach Liam Rosenior – reportedly the first choice to replace Enzo Maresca at Chelsea – said on Friday he was not giving «notice» to the rumours.

Italian Maresca left Chelsea on Thursday with the team struggling in fifth place after just one win in their last seven Premier League matches, and after reportedly holding talks with Manchester City over Pep Guardiola’s successor.

Strasbourg is owned by Chelsea’s parent company, BlueCo, and Rosenior impressed in his first season at the club by guiding the side to a seventh-place finish.

«I don’t pay attention to it. If you are a manager and you pay attention to what is said in the media, you will probably go crazy,» Rosenior said ahead of Saturday’s visit to Nice in Ligue 1.

«My work is here. I love this club. I am working to win the match tomorrow.»

“Of course I am aware that there is speculation, but I think this is a reflection of the great work that everyone has done at this football club.”

But when a journalist pressed him on whether he would still be in Strasbourg in six months, Rosenior was more vague.

«You can’t guarantee anything in life. In terms of interest from other clubs, I’ve had a lot of interest, a lot of approaches that I’ve always been open about with the club,» he said.

“My focus is always on the work that I’m doing. But to say that I’m definitely going to be somewhere or I’m definitely going to do something, I don’t think that’s right because in life, things happen.”

Rosenior started his full-time managerial career with Hull City in November 2022, with the team finishing 21st in the Championship, having lost 10 of their first 18 games.

It lost just six more that season as he guided the club to a 15th-place finish, improving on that the following season when it finished seventh.

He then moved to Strasbourg and led them to Europe in his first season. This season they currently sit seventh in Ligue 1 and top of the group stages of the Europa Conference League.
