Premier League 2025-26: Manchester United’s Martinez hits back at former players Scholes, Butt over pre-derby jibes

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez has invited Paul Scholes to his home to speak personally after he was mocked by the big club ahead of his excellent performance in the derby win over Manchester City.

In a podcast ahead of the derby on Saturday, Scholes and fellow former United player Nicky Butt fired at Martinez as they thought he would be overpowered by City striker Erling Haaland.

Butt said Haaland would «pick Martinez up and run with him» and act like a «dad running down the road after school with a little toddler.» Scholes said the Norway international would throw him (Martinez) into the net after scoring.

As it turned out, United defeated City 2-0, limiting the fierce rival to just one shot on target.

When Scholes’ comment was put to Martinez after the match, the Argentine defender said: «No, honestly, he can say whatever he wants. I already told him that if he wants to say something to me, he can come wherever he wants. To my house, anywhere. I don’t care.»

“And I think I respect the relationships if they want to help the club, because everyone can talk on television, but when you see them here in person, no one says anything to your face,” he added.

When asked if the pre-match comments give him extra motivation, Martinez said: «No, no, nothing. It doesn’t give me anything. My motivation is my family. That’s all.»

On Sunday, Scholes responded to Martinez’s comments by posting at Instagram Stories: «Someone had a good game and was very happy for you. Tea, no sugar please… @lisandromartinezzz.»
