Senegal, Africa’s second best team in the rankings, have reached their third final in four editions of AFCON.
It reached the summit clash after beating record winners Egypt 1-0 thanks to a goal from veteran Sadio Mane, who had previously announced it would be his last appearance in the tournament.
When was the last time Senegal won AFCON?
This is the fourth time Senegal has reached the final of AFCON, having first achieved the feat in 2002. The country was defeated 3-2 in a penalty shootout by Cameroon on that occasion after the match ended 0-0.
The next time Senegal reached the final was in 2019, where it was defeated again, this time 1-0 in regular time, thanks to a second-minute goal from Baghdad Bounedjah.
However, Senegal finally got their hands on the trophy in the subsequent edition in 2021, beating Egypt 4-2 on penalties after the match ended 0-0.
