Argentina defender Juan Foyth will miss the 2026 FIFA World Cup due to an Achilles tendon injury

Argentine defender Juan Foyth has ruptured his left Achilles tendon while playing for Villarreal in the Spanish league and will miss the World Cup.

Foyth was injured in the 23rd minute during Villarreal’s 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid on Saturday.

Villarreal said on Sunday that tests confirmed the injury.

The club said it will “provide further information in due course regarding the surgical procedure he will need to undergo”.

The recovery time for such injuries can take up to a year, meaning the 28-year-old centre-back is unlikely to play in the World Cup starting in June.

Foyth has had long-term knee and shoulder injuries in the past. His contract with Villarreal was recently extended until 2029.
