UEFA Champions League: Borussia Dortmund vs. Inter Milan, Monaco vs. Juventus end up making all-team play-offs

Inter Milan scored twice late in the match to secure a 2-0 win over hosts Borussia Dortmund in their final Champions League match on Wednesday, but that was not enough for a top eight finish, with both teams entering the play-offs in February for a place in the knockout stages. AS Monaco and Juventus, on the other hand, played a quiet 0-0 draw in the Principality, a cautious game that was still enough to send both sides through to the play-offs.

Federico Dimarco scored a sublime free-kick in the 81st minute before Andy Diouf added another goal in stoppage time to break Inter’s three-match losing streak in the league.

The win lifted Inter to 15 points, but narrowly missed out on the top eight. The Germans also enter the two-legged play-offs for a place in the Round of 16, having finished in 17th place with 11 points.

The top eight teams from the league stage qualify for the round of 16, while the next 16 teams enter the play-offs.

Monaco and Juventus through

The result of the Monaco-Juventus match lacked lustre, but it was enough for both sides to progress, with the Old Lady taking a seeded spot and the opposition advancing as unseeded qualifiers.

The hosts started on the front foot and applied early pressure, but visiting goalkeeper Mattia Perin calmly dealt with the shots that came his way before half-time.

The second half followed much the same pattern, with Monaco dominating possession and roaming the Juventus perimeter, but the side’s attacks either lacked an edge or proved no real test for Perin.

With a draw comfortably within reach for both sides, the closing stages were played with limited urgency and the match became increasingly punctuated by stoppages and substitutions. Despite a brief late flurry, it wound down to a largely forgettable ending.
