Lens climbed back above Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to top spot in the French Ligue 1 on Friday after a Ruben Aguilar goal secured a 1-0 win at home against struggling Le Havre.
Aguilar, a right-back once capped by France in 2020, arrived at the far post and scored from Matthieu Udol’s cross in first-half stoppage time on a rainy night in France’s far north.
It was a welcome return to winning ways for Lens, who had made it 10 straight wins between league and cup before losing 1-3 at Marseille last weekend.
Lens therefore ended up in second place in the Ligue 1 table this match, two points behind PSG.
The victory moved them one point clear at the top after twenty games. However, Luis Enrique’s side could regain top spot by avoiding defeat against Strasbourg on Sunday.
Lens are also eight points ahead of Marseille, who will look to bounce back from the disappointment of being eliminated from the Champions League in midweek when they travel to Paris FC on Saturday.
Lyon hosts Lille on Sunday in a meeting between the teams in fourth and fifth place respectively.
