TA Day 90: Christmas Cruise to the South Island

Happy Holidays and greetings from Picton on the South Island of Aotearoa!

This morning the Chokolade team, Sarah and I caught the ferry from Wellington to Picton. Santa was on board greeting us on our Christmas cruise. I really enjoyed the decorations and all the staff dressing up as elves to make the day more festive.

Wellington is the windiest city in the world and there were strong winds that blew us away. Despite the wind, I found shelter outside on the deck of the ship; enjoying the walk and the fresh air.

It felt strange to see the North Island getting smaller and smaller. Everyone I met said the South Island is stunning and I had been waiting for this day for a long time.

My excitement grew as the South Island came closer and closer into view. Finally the ferry arrived at the port of Picton. Now it really felt like the beginning of a new adventure.

As it was Christmas, we were unexpectedly surprised by a delicious lunch at Atlantis Backpackers where Sarah and I were spending the night.

After socializing with some of the other hostel guests and eating too much, I headed out for a little walk around town.

As it was a holiday, none of the stores were open. However, I had a great time talking on the phone with a friend, exploring the harbor and taking a short walk in the hills before heading back to the hostel. I returned just as the rain began to fall.

Despite the stormy afternoon, our ferry ride had great weather. Let’s hope conditions are clear for the start of our South Island walk tomorrow! Happy holidays!
