Inter Milan qualified for the semi-finals of the Italian Cup on Wednesday by beating the struggling Torino 2-1.
French duo Ange-Yoan Bonny and Andy Diouf, both 22, put Inter ahead 2-0 as Inter threatened to run away with the draw, but Torino pulled a goal back through Croatian striker Sandro Kulenovic’s towering header.
Inter coach Cristian Chivu rested star striker Lautaro Martinez and the match was played in Monza, where the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics will take place on Friday.
Inter are the first team to qualify for the semi-finals, with Atalanta hosting Juventus on Thursday, while Napoli take on Como and Bologna await Lazio in next week’s matches.
Centre-forward Bonny put Inter ahead with a powerful, angular header that flew straight through the arms of Torino goalkeeper Alberto Paleari after 35 minutes.
Inter then raced out of the blocks in the second half when Diouf tapped in Marcus Thuram’s cross in the 47th minute.
The Serie A leaders dominated possession and passing, while Torino struggled to keep control as Kulenovic pulled Torino back into the match just before the hour mark.
But Inter held firm with a disciplined defensive display while Torino went down fighting.
