Manchester United took advantage of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero’s red card to extend its perfect start under Michael Carrick to four games with a 2-0 win at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes ended an eight-match winless run against Spurs for the Red Devils, who consolidated their position in the Premier League’s top four.
United are almost two points clear of third-placed Aston Villa and have moved five points ahead of Liverpool in sixth place.
A top-five finish is likely to secure a place in next season’s Champions League due to the strong performances of English sides in European competition.
Spurs’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through their league position are long gone, with Tottenham once again left in 14th place.
AS IT HAPPENED: MUN VS TO HIGHLIGHTS
But there could be lasting consequences for Romero after his poor discipline cost his side just days after a social media outburst aimed at the club’s hierarchy.
Frank said the Argentina international was being ‘addressed internally’ after describing Tottenham’s threadbare squad as ‘disgraceful’ after the close of the transfer window.
Romero’s future as captain has already been called into question and the 27-year-old will now face a four-match ban following his second red card of the season and the sixth of his Spurs career.
The centre-back darted in to catch Casemiro on the ankle in the 29th minute after getting himself into trouble just outside the Tottenham area.
United had been the better team during the first half hour, even against eleven men, and made their numerical advantage count.
Mbeumo fired into the bottom corner for his third goal in four games since Carrick took the lead after a clever corner involving Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo freed the Cameroon international on the edge of the box.
Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha had goals disallowed for offside as the home side dominated, but had to wait until nine minutes from time to secure the points.
Fernandes poked home Diogo Dalot’s cross at the back post for his 200th goal in 314 appearances for the club.
Carrick said before the match that United cannot afford to rush the choice of a new permanent manager.
But the former midfielder, who enjoyed a stellar playing career at Old Trafford, is making his case for the job as he continues to oversee United’s stunning turnaround since the departure of Ruben Amorim last month.
