Liam Rosenior looked on course to oversee the Blues’ fifth successive Premier League win since his arrival before a depleted Leeds United battled from 0-2 to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday hgtgdfgdtr15.
The inability to hold on to all three points means Chelsea have lost seventeen of their winning positions this season, fifteen of them on home turf.
Rosenior had spoken earlier this week of the ‘extreme mental toughness’ of his players after they fought back from losing positions to win against West Ham United in the Premier League and Napoli in the Champions League under his watch.
So Tuesday’s inability to hold a two-goal lead felt like a setback for Rosenior.
“We just have to make sure we take care of moments and be professional,” he told reporters. “If we can just focus and concentrate for 90 minutes, this team has incredible potential, which you probably saw 90% of the game today.”
Chelsea appeared to have the match in their sights, adding to the momentum in the hunt for a Champions League spot.
Joao Pedro and a rejuvenated Cole Palmer ensured the Brazilian striker opened the scoring in the 24th minute with his sixth goal since Rosenior replaced Enzo Maresca last month.
Palmer made it 2-0 with a penalty in the 58th after Joao Pedro was needlessly pushed over by Leeds stand-in centre-back Jaka Bijol.
But just as the home fans were wondering how big the winning margin would be, the visiting side pulled a goal back with their own penalty, which was converted by Lukas Nmecha in the 67th minute.
In the 73rd minute, Leeds were level when Chelsea failed to clear and substitute Noah Okafor tapped into an empty net.
The visiting side withstood a siege from Chelsea late in the match before Palmer missed by two yards in stoppage time, leaving the Blues in fifth place, one point behind Manchester United, who grabbed a 1-1 draw at West Ham United late on.
«The ridiculous thing for us is that they managed to score two goals in a period of five minutes and we were by far the better team for the remaining 90 minutes of the match,» Rosenior said.
He added that Chelsea’s Spanish left-back Marc Cucurella had a hamstring problem and would undergo a scan.
Leeds boss Daniel Farke praised the spirit of his side, who were missing a number of key players through injury, for his side’s bounce back.
“If you are two nil behind, it can of course be a long night, but with our players we have a ‘never say that’ attitude,” said the German coach.
The point pushed Leeds into 15th place, one place and a point above Tottenham Hotspur, who lost 1–2 at home to Newcastle United.
