T20 World Cup 2026: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson returns home for the birth of his first child

New Zealand bowler Lockie Ferguson returns home to be with his wife for the birth of their first child on Sunday and will miss the team’s final Group D match of the T20 World Cup against Canada.

Head coach Rob Walter said the intention is for Ferguson to rejoin the squad so he will be available for the tournament’s Super 8s if the team reaches that stage.

New Zealand, who suffered a seven-wicket loss to South Africa in the Group D match in Ahmedabad on Saturday, will face Canada in Chennai on Tuesday.

«It’s an incredibly exciting time for Lockie and Emma, and we’re thrilled he will be home for such a special occasion,» Walter said in a statement released by New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

“At this stage we will not be replacing Lockie in the squad as the intention is for him to return for the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

“But our traveling reserves, Ben Sears and Cole McConchie, are ready to be called into the fold if we need them.” The 34-year-old Ferguson has taken four wickets for 108 runs in the three matches he has played so far. New Zealand is currently second in Group D with four points.
