Tsutomu Ogura has resigned from his position as head coach of the national team of Singapore, said the country’s football club in a statement on Tuesday.
«The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) announces that Mr. Tsutomu Ogura has decided to resign from his position as head coach of the national team of Singapore, with immediate effect, for personal reasons,» said the FAS.
Ogura, 58, is the third consecutive Japanese coach responsible for Singapore, successor to Takayuki Nishigaya, who was fired in January 2024, who had previously taken over from Tatsuma Yoshida, who stopped in 2021.
He was also the director of the men’s team under 22.
«Mr. Ogura informed the FAs a few weeks ago about his decision, with reference to the need to return to his home country to ensure urgent personal matters. Since then, the FAS -executive committee has been in close consultation with Mr. Ogura to explore different ways to facilitate his continuous term of office,» the FAS added.
«Despite collective efforts and a mutual desire to maintain the working relationship, the nature of the personal issues ultimately made it untenable to him.»
After leading the lions for successive victories in June, Ogura leaves a 3-1 victory over the Maldives in an international friendship on June 5, and a 2-1 way victory over Bangladesh in the Asian Cup qualification match five days later.
Singapore then plays India in successive Asian Cup qualifications, at home and road, on 9 and 14 October respectively.
The FAS has appointed Gavin Lee, former head coach of BG Tampines Rovers FC, to lead the Singapore while looking for a new permanent head coach.
