UEFA Women’s Champions League — Manchester United reaches the UWCL quarter-finals for the first time

Manchester United reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL) for the first time on Thursday, while two-time champions Wolfsburg defeated Juventus to advance.

United produced another dominant performance, beating Atletico Madrid 2–0 to advance 5–0 on aggregate. Wolfsburg also won 2–0 and advanced to their 13th quarter-final in 14 seasons with an aggregate score of 4–2.

Title holders Arsenal and Real Madrid reached the quarter-finals on Wednesday after eliminating OH Leuven and Paris FC respectively.

After taking a healthy lead in Madrid, United continued in similar fashion at Leigh Sports Village.

Julia Zigiotti Olme, who also scored last week, broke the deadlock within half an hour with an accurate left-foot shot.

Jess Park doubled the lead with a stunning long-range drive before the break as United set up a meeting with Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

Atletico defender Xènia Pérez was sent off five minutes before the end due to her second yellow card.

In Turin, Wolfsburg piled on the pressure before Vivien Endemann opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a quick counter-attack as she collected a pass from Svenja Huth in the penalty area and fired a low right-foot shot past goalkeeper Danielle de Jong.

Ana Capeta came close to an equalizer when she hit the crossbar with the best of numerous chances for the hosts, before substitute Cora Zicai scored the second in the sixth minute of stoppage time.

The German club rallied from two goals at home in the first leg last week to draw 2-2 and set up a quarter-final against record eight-time European champions Lyon.

The new UWCL format follows the men’s format launched last year, with an opening phase of the competition.

The top four in the standings – Barcelona, Lyon, Chelsea and Bayern – went straight to the quarter-finals. Teams ranked fifth through twelfth advanced to the playoffs, and those ranked 13th through 18th were eliminated.
