Michael Carrick praised Manchester United’s «diversity» after co-owner Jim Ratcliffe sparked controversy by claiming Britain has been «colonized by immigrants».
Ratcliffe was widely criticized for his outburst last week and later apologized if his comments had “offended some people”.
Appearing in the media for the first time since Ratcliffe’s inflammatory comments on Friday, United interim manager Carrick emphasized his club’s inclusive attitude.
«Sir Jim made a statement, and then the club made a statement, so it’s not for me to add anything to that. What I can say is that, having been with this club for many, many years, we have always had a huge impact on a global level,» Carrick told reporters on Friday.
“We are very proud of the environment and culture we have at the club, and equality, diversity and respect for each other is something we try to promote every day.”
Carrick has spent 12 years as United’s decorated midfielder and is in his second spell as temporary boss following the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January.

The 44-year-old is deeply rooted in United’s culture and has no doubts about the integrity of the club’s efforts to welcome people of all ethnicities.
“Part of being at this club is understanding what it’s like globally and what responsibilities we have,” he said.
«I can only speak from my experiences. I’ve been here for a long time with different managers, different staff, all backgrounds, different backgrounds and it’s something I’m fully aware of. I’m proud of what the club stands for.»
Carrick is confident the controversy caused by Ratcliffe’s views will not have a negative effect on his multinational squad.
«We’ve got a really strong group, whether that’s the players and the staff and around the club. I think we’re in constant communication anyway and talking to each other and helping each other,» Carrick said ahead of Monday’s Premier League match against Everton.
«The boys were in a really good mood this week. We are looking forward to the next game. We are here to help and support each other.»
