Vietnam will become home to the world’s largest stadium by capacity as construction of Trong Dong Stadium begins in Hanoi this week. The proposed arena will seat 135,000 spectators, surpassing the current record of India’s Narendra Modi Stadium, which has a capacity of 132,000. Designed in the shape of the Dong Son bronze drum, a revered symbol of ancient Vietnamese civilization, the stadium aims to reflect ideals of community, strength and longevity. Among football venues, its size would dwarf some of the most recognizable grounds in the world. It could hold almost twice as many spectators as Old Trafford, the Allianz Arena or the Maracana Stadium.

“Hanoi – the country’s capital – as a political, cultural and diplomatic center has the responsibility to take the lead in establishing national-level sports institutions that meet the requirements of sustainable development and international integration,” the stadium’s website said.
“In this context, Trong Dong Stadium is being developed with the same strategic vision, focusing not only on its purely sporting function, but also on becoming an architectural and cultural icon that represents Vietnam in the new era,” it added.
The stadium is being developed by Vingroup JSC, one of Vietnam’s largest private conglomerates, and is expected to be completed in August 2028.
