Get to the AT
After taking a red-eye flight from Spokane-Seattle-Atlanta, I arrived at the Atlanta airport at 05:30. I texted FurthurShuttle to let them know I had arrived early (I had an ETA of ~08:30), Mary with FuthurShuttle responded that she was coming early and would meet me at 07:00, she arrived at 06:30, I was surprised because I have been watching her YouTube channel (Grateful Hiker) for updates on the trails. He stopped shortly after picking me up to go get water (they had sold me a cooking gas cylinder). Driving was enjoyable and Mary provided helpful information about the AT Trail. We arrived at Amicalola Falls at 08:30.
AT Registration
I checked in and attended the pre-hike training session led by Tonya (Monarch) and Willie Nelson. I met other hikers, a couple from NH and Rod from VA. I got tag number 202.
Afternoon walks
I dropped off my backpack at the Visitor Center, had a quick lunch at the store, and began hiking part of the Approach Trail, including the 604 stairs at Amicalola Falls. I continued for a couple more miles past the Lodge where I spent the night. Nice sunny afternoon, walked a bit with Rod (VA). I got lost once (a common occurrence for me).
I met up with my sister and brother-in-law.
After enjoying some ice cream after my hikes, I met up with Elizabeth and Jim (sister and brother-in-law) for a nice visit, they came from Conyers, GA. We visited the park for a bit (without going back up the stairs). I was grateful that they took me and my backpack to the hostel (I didn’t want to repeat myself) and we had a very nice meal (the shrimp and grits were great). They left at dusk and I went through my backpack and repacked it maybe three or four times before starting the next day. Everything’s fine.
