The Indian women’s national team suffered a major setback when Anju Tamang was ruled out of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup due to injury a week before the tournament.
«Midfielder Anju Tamang has been ruled out of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup due to injury. Striker Karishma Shirvoikar will replace Anju in India’s 26-man squad,» the All India Football Federation (AIFF) said in a statement on Tuesday.
A two-time winner of the Indian Women’s Nations League, including last season, Anju was one of the most experienced players in the squad. Her last goal, an integral part of the squad in the qualifying campaign, came in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Swiss club FC Schlieren a month ago, which India won 2-0.
India have qualified for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on merit for the first time, drawing with Vietnam, Japan and Chinese Taipei in Group C. The country opens the campaign against Vietnam on March 4, before playing Japan three days later and Chinese Taipei on March 10.
