Spanish prosecutors demand prison sentence for fan for racist abuse of Mbappé

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a one-year prison sentence and a 2,880-euro fine for a man who imitated a monkey after Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe scored in a match last year rfv6.

Prosecutors said the suspect, “acting with obvious disregard for the player’s skin color,” shouted and made “disparaging gestures” toward Mbappe during a match against Real Oviedo in August.

The gestures, which included «simulating primate movements and sounds,» were clearly audible to onlookers, prosecutors said in a statement.

It was the first incident against the French star since his arrival at Real Madrid in 2024, although racist abuse is still common in La Liga.

Mbappe’s Brazilian teammate Vinicius Junior has been the target of racist abuse since joining the club in 2018 and is at the center of a new controversy.

Vinicius has accused Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during a Champions League match this month, which the Argentine denied. Albacete’s fans reportedly sang racist songs against him in January.

In May 2025, five Valladolid supporters were jailed for one year for racist insults against Vinícius in 2022.

Four members of an Atletico Madrid ultra group were given prison sentences in January 2023 for displaying an image of Vinicius, although the sentence was later commuted to fines.
