Premier League 2025-26: Ekitike leads the attack as Liverpool attack West Ham United

Liverpool climbed into the top five of the Premier League on Saturday with a 5-2 win over struggling West Ham.

Three first-half goals, all from set-pieces, from Hugo Ekitike, Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister put Arne Slot’s men on course for a fourth successive victory in all competitions.

Dutch duo Cody Gakpo and Jeremy Frimpong scored more goals after the break, but despite the result it was another far from convincing performance from the English champions.

The defeat deals another blow to West Ham’s chances of survival as safety still leaves two points to be desired.

But they hit back twice in the second half through Tomas Soucek and Valentin Castellanos and could have scored more at Anfield.

A top-five finish will almost certainly secure Champions League football next season, thanks to strong results from English sides in European competition this season.

Liverpool are three points ahead of sixth-placed Chelsea, who face the daunting task of an away trip to Arsenal on Sunday.

City sit at the top of the table, five points behind the Gunners, but have a game in hand.

Pep Guardiola’s men will have to do without prolific top scorer Erling Haaland, who will miss the trip to his hometown due to a knee injury.

City face a tough task if they want to secure a sixth straight win against a Leeds team who have lost just twice in 16 games in all competitions.

Brentford beats Burnley in thriller

Burnley’s slim chances of survival were dealt another major blow in the painful 4-3 defeat at home to Brentford.

The Bees were on course to victory and within two points of Chelsea when goals from Mikkel Damsgaard, Igor Thiago and Kevin Schade put them 3-0 ahead at Turf Moor inside 34 minutes.

Michael Kayode’s own goal gave the Clarets hope before half-time and they leveled through Jaidon Anthony and Zian Flemming.

Flemming thought he had made a remarkable comeback, only for a VAR review to rule out the goal for offside.

Instead, it was Brentford who snatched victory from the jaws of defeat as Damsgaard scored his second goal in stoppage time edc6.

There was still time for another VAR review to deny Burnley a point when Ashley Barnes was adjudged to have handled the ball before scoring the equalizer in the 98th minute.

Everton steals a narrow victory over Newcastle United

Everton recorded another excellent away win and maintained their hopes of European football next season with a 3-2 victory over Newcastle.

The Toffees led three times at St James’ Park through Jarrod Branthwaite, Beto and Thierno Barry.

Newcastle slip to 12th place, with their success of the season now dependent on heroics in the Champions League against Barcelona and City in the fifth round of the FA Cup next weekend.

Everton have struggled to adapt to their new home, the Hill Dickinson Stadium, but only Arsenal have picked up more points along the way as David Moyes climbs to eighth.
