The runners-up from the previous edition, South Korea and former champion Australia, qualified for the quarter-finals of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup on Thursday.
Hosts Australia, who bowed out in the quarter-finals of the 2022 edition, kept their winning form going with a comfortable 4-0 win over Iran.
Amy Sayers put Australia ahead in the eighth minute at the Gold Coast Stadium before Manchester City’s Mary Fowler doubled the lead three minutes before the half-hour mark. Alanna Kennedy made it 3-0 before half time, but doubled her total after half time.
2022 runners-up South Korea, meanwhile, retained their place at the top of the group with a 3-0 win over the Philippines.
Within 15 minutes they took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Jeon Yu-gyeong and Park Soo-jeong. Park added a second after half-time to complete a comfortable 3-0 win.
With both teams in the quarter-finals, Australia and South Korea will now meet at Stadium Australia in Sydney to determine who will finish top of the group.
If the teams win their respective last eight matches, they will not only progress to the semi-finals, but also book a place at next year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
