Hiawassee – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 6

Today I went up at 6 and left at 7 to arrive at Unicoi Gap for my 9 o’clock shuttle fgh6.

When you reach this part of the AT, you can easily get to Hiawassee or Helen. We went to Helen a lot growing up and I remember it being very tourist focused so I opted for Hiawasee. It worked perfectly, because everything I needed was in one block: clothing stores, hardware stores, post office and English.

El Ingles has a deli and you can order sandwiches or a whole roast chicken. Obviously being me, I chose the latter and a bagged Caesar salad mix they had for sale. Yes, I ate the whole chicken by myself.

My accommodations for the night

The rest of the day was spent doing the usual city activities: laundry, showering, sorting supplies, blogging. It’s a short list but it takes time. Today also taught me the importance of having a clear plan before arriving in the city. Getting around the city can be expensive, slow or impossible without having a problem with luck. If you forget something in your room that you wanted to mail home, you may have to take it to the next city.
