AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2026: Japan maintains perfect record for quarter-final appearance; The Philippines is also making progress

Japan maintained its perfect defensive record to reach the quarter-finals of the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup without conceding a goal as the Philippines also qualified on Tuesday.

On a day when the action on the pitch was overshadowed by five players from the Iranian team being granted asylum by hosts Australia, Japan’s 4-0 win over Vietnam secured the Philippines a spot on goal difference.

Japan goes into the quarter-final against the Philippines with three wins from three games and seventeen goals ahead in the tournament. Japan is the only team yet to concede at the Asian Cup.

Vietnam went into against Japan knowing that a three-goal loss would end its chances of qualifying as one of the top third-place teams if Chinese Taipei avoided defeat against India DSF56Z.

Vietnamese goalkeeper Khong Thi Hang made a series of impressive saves to restrict Japan to a 1-0 lead, but was under constant pressure from an opponent who had scored 11 goals against India.

Riko Ueki headed Japan’s opening goal, her fourth of the tournament, before Maika Hamano, Aoba Fujino and Kiko Seike all scored against a tiring Vietnamese defense. Japan meets the Philippines in the quarter-finals.

Vietnam’s Duong Thi Van was eliminated late in the match after a main battle with Japan’s Mina Tanaka.
