Barcelona have been given permission to open the north stand and expand the capacity of the partially rebuilt Camp Nou home to almost 63,000, the Spanish champions said on Tuesday cvvd.
After serious delays in the reopening of the stadium, which was closed for more than two years during construction work, the club was able to accommodate fans in three of the four 45,000-capacity stands when it returned in November.
“With the activation of VIP areas and the Gol Norte (north stand), the capacity of Spotify Camp Nou will be expanded to 62,652 spectators,” the club said in a statement.
The La Liga leader will host Sevilla in the first match on Sunday where they can benefit from the increased capacity after the municipal council granted them the necessary permit.
The Catalan giants initially planned to reopen the stadium in November 2024, to coincide with the club’s 125th anniversary, but a series of delays led to the return home being postponed by a year.
At Camp Nou, work will continue to build the third level of the stadium, giving it a capacity of 105,000 and then adding a roof. The 1.5 billion euro ($1.75 billion) project is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
