Hiker trapped by dangerous rivers crosses

This morning I woke up around 6 in the morning and lay in bed for a while. There are tons of hikers in the hostel at this time, so I definitely didn’t want to be too late for breakfast. In general, everyone arrives around 6:30 am, but breakfast does not really start until around 7 am. So I got up and slowly prepared for the day. Then he went to the main house.

There were tons of people inside, filling the front room, the kitchen and the dining room. But there was a place in the main kitchen where I could sit. I felt much less rigid this morning, which was great. Last night I was limping like crazy. But this morning I was moving much more easily. Which is really similar to what happened two mornings ago. The night before I had been very rigid and then, the next morning, I felt much better. Then I could do 29 miles without any problem.

The poet made a snail pancake this morning!

It was very nice to sit and breakfast with tons of hikers as I did for two weeks in a row. This time, although I really can enjoy it, because I’m also walking. He felt great to sit here knowing that I finished Katahdin and then went to the Canadian border. And now all I have left to do is 218 miles south from here and I will completely end with the east coast. All Key West miles, Florida to Canada. I feel quite achieved in any way. It will be really pleasant to close the book in this very long chapter in the east.

Breakfast was incredible as always. And while the hikers were sitting, they were discussing the weather. I suppose that a group of people had decided to stay in the shelter for an extra day because the weather is apparently supposed to be really bad today. I did not even think about it last night, but when this part of the country rains a ton, it usually causes some floods. There are tons of river crossing in Maine and swell like crazy after rain. And last night it rained a ton!

Apparently, it is also supposed to pour rain later today. Therefore, it will be interesting to see how rivers rise during the day. If I left here today, I have to wade three questionable rivers in the first 15 miles. Two of which are infamous for really deepening after the rain. Some of the crosses here go from a rock to swim during the night. I don’t know how I let that leave my mind, but I really did. And now it seems something that I will definitely have to worry over the next few days.

After breakfast, I went to the main room, which is basically the hiker. And I felt comfortable in a chair and decided to do some writing and video. I’m still far away, but I’ve been breaking it. If I don’t finish walking today, then I hope it is completely trapped. Or at least be completely trapped when I leave here. We will only have to do.

I also left and talked to a group of hikers when I was in the living room. A guy with whom I recognized who I crossed with the Ferry Harpers. And there was a guy who went this morning that is also doing a triple crown of the calendar year. Although nobody mentioned it until after he left, so I really couldn’t talk to him about it. And then there were two brothers who climbed the entire path so far together. Which I think it’s really great! It would be incredible to make a trip like this with a brother or family of any kind.

While I sat in the living room, I finished a lot of YouTube videos and began to upload them. Usually, they take a long time to load, so I thought it would be good to have it passively in the background. I also made the edition in a couple of blogs to be able to publish at least two today. And also obtained a short video. I still have many more things to do, but I began to be very sleepy while I sat there.

Around 11 am, I was sleeping in my chair while working. Hippie Chick entered and told me that she should go to bed at home. Due to all the people who stay for the storm, I think I will stay in their free room tonight. That will release them to have an extra bunk for someone else in the shelter. I got to the house and left my things there again. But then I walked down the street to the general store to take something to eat and some snacks for later.

After sitting in a chair for a few hours, I was again very rigid again. But when I walked down the street to the general store, I had almost completely loosened. It is very fun how fast it is established and also how fast I can get out of it. That is the only hopeful thing of this strange tension. At least it doesn’t last long once it moves again. It is something that I had never experienced before.

In the store, I obtained a quarter of ice cream, a thing of coffee milk, a sandwich, some cookies and some other snacks. Then I walked back to the house and sat in the lunch room. I also drank a soda and talked with some hikers while I was there.

Lunch of the general store.

After eating and spending a little more time, I finally went to the gear store. I went out with Trippy, Cooper, Hippie Chick and Poet for a moment. Then he ended up lying to do more work. I went to bed there for an hour or so, and did some things. Then he ended up falling asleep and sleeping a nap for a couple of hours. Which I am sure that my body really appreciated.

When I got up, apparently all kinds of chaos had continued. I saw Hippie Chick and she filled me about something of madness. As he had briefly thought before, the rain had increased water levels near the path. In fact, many hikers south and north had called the shelter trying to rescue. Some different people were trapped between two different rivers. Which means they were pairing a river and tried to wade another the next morning. So effectively they had camped between the two on dry land. But when they tried to wade the next river, it was completely impassable. Fortunately, some different hikers found each other, and everyone had the same problem. Speech ended by crossing the forest by miles until they went out to a felling road. Then we can walk on the registration path to Blanchard. Where the hippie girl could pick them up.

A different hiker had waded a very dangerous river that was going to the north. And some hikers to the south had apparently dragged her out of the river and said she had put himself in a really bad position. Obviously, that is just a person’s opinion, so it is difficult to know exactly what happened. But it seems that many different people found some problems due to the increase in water level. And because of this, a group of hikers didn’t want to leave either. If it stops raining and does not rain today, then the water level will fall a lot to tomorrow. But it will take days to fall substantially. With luck for tomorrow or the next day, it will return to a passable level. But some of the crosses can still be incomplete safely.

This means that I will definitely have to read some water reports and verify some of the local indicators before deciding what to do tomorrow. Originally I was planning to walk the 16 miles south here. Then I could return to the summer solstice barbecue and enjoy that. So he would still get some mileage and also get an additional break. Then, the next day, it would only have about 18 miles to get to Canternt. What is the next resupply location. But there is no way of knowing if this game plan will be feasible for tomorrow.

At this time, one of the water meters is to read around 3000. It measures the depth and speed of water in a couple of particular rivers. Apparently, 300 is a safe crossing and 500 is potentially manageable depending on its skill level. Then 3000 would be completely impossible. Probably anything above 500 would be quite dangerous and probably impassable. 500 might not even be passable. So I will only have to do what happens. There are three important rivers crossings that would have to do tomorrow. Two of which are normally above the knee on a good day. Therefore, it is really difficult to say it with the state of those rivers. The hikers who entered today said the crossing of Ríos, who were normally to the knee, were literally to the chest. A hiker tried to swim without his backpack to be able to chain a line for everyone to cross. He couldn’t even swim without a package, this speed was the movement of water. Which is really difficult to understand. One of the hikers even showed me a video in the river did not seem to move so fast. But it is really difficult to know from the surface of the water the rapid one that moves below.

Everything was quite wild to speak. It is crazy. Look what happens when you take a fast nap!

So, everyone in the shelter were working overtime trying to manage everything and help everyone. They had to find out where to put all additional hikers and also make some emergency trips to pick up people. Needless to say, everyone was super busy. But around 6-7 pm, things began to calm down and ended up dating Trippy, Cooper and Hippie Chick for a while. Then he spent most of the rest of the night hanging out in the kitchen with a hippie girl while preparing some of the food for tomorrow. It was really nice to talk and hang out together. It is crazy how fast a place can feel at home.

Later at night, I decided to go to bed and relax for the rest of the night. I ate a little ice cream and did more writing and video work until I was too tired to continue. And I’ve been looking for a couple of different options for tomorrow. There are at least one or two alternative routes that can take if the rivers are really high. These are the routes that the old path of the Apalaches really used to continue years ago. So that could be a possibility for tomorrow. But unfortunately, the roads I found would not avoid the crosses of the river completely. It seems that I could avoid a couple of worst, but not all. And there is the possibility that most of them are impassable for tomorrow. I will only have to review the water levels in the morning and make a decision of Gametime.
