Fifth place in the Champions League: England lead coefficient race despite UCL departure, on course for extra place for 2026/27

England remain firmly on course to claim an additional place in the UEFA Champions League for the 2026/27 season, despite a largely disappointing performance from its clubs in the round of 16 of the ongoing edition.

During a difficult midweek, four of the six Premier League representatives – Chelsea, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur – dropped out of the competition. That leaves only Arsenal and Liverpool to continue England’s hopes of reaching Europe’s premier club tournament.

Yet England remain top of the UEFA rankings by a comfortable margin. The system evaluates the collective performance of clubs from each country in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.

At the end of the season, the two best countries in the coefficient rankings receive an extra Champions League qualification slot, a so-called European Performance Spot. Lihat juga cdse. England secured such a place alongside Spain last season, and current trends suggest they are well placed to do so again in 2026/2027.

How the coefficient system works

• Clubs earn points for their respective countries based on results in European competitions. A win scores two points, a draw one, while defeats do not contribute.

• The overall total for each country is then divided by the number of participating clubs in Europe, yielding an average score that determines the rankings.

• In addition to match results, bonus points will be awarded for rankings in the competition phase and progress through the knockout rounds.

• These bonuses carry more weight in the Champions League than in the Europa League or Conference League. For example, topping the competitive stage of the Champions League earns twelve bonus points, compared to six in the Europa League and four in the Conference League.

Current ranking

Although a majority of England’s Champions League participants have left, the country retains a significant advantage at the top of the coefficient table.

England are five points ahead of third-placed Germany, who still have four clubs involved in European competitions. England now still has five teams active on the way to the next round.

Germany’s hopes partly depend on Freiburg and VfB Stuttgart, both of whom must overcome home deficits in the first leg to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Spain are second, four points behind England, while Portugal is five points behind in fourth. Italy, currently fifth, are no longer in contention to catch England after all their clubs were eliminated from the Champions League.
