ISL 2025-26: Noufal strike sends Mumbai City FC to top of the table with a lone win over Mohun Bagan


Mumbai City FC recorded a narrow but impressive 1-0 victory over defending champions Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the 2025-26 Indian Super League at the latter’s home stadium at the Salt Lake Stadium.

The only goal came from Mumbai winger Noufal PN, who struck midway through the first half and turned the match in the visitors’ favour. The result took Mumbai City to the top of the standings with 14 points from six matches, while Mohun Bagan dropped to second place with 13 from six.

Mumbai entered the match after a cautious start and started threatening through quick counter-attacks. They almost took the lead in the 21st minute when Lallianzuala Chhangte was released by Joni Kauko’s precise pass, but goalkeeper Vishal Kaith produced a sharp save, with Mehtab Singh clearing the rebound.

The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after a fluid attacking move. Pereyra Díaz combined neatly with Kauko on the left before the ball was worked to an unmarked Noufal, who calmly curled a low shot past Kaith.

Mohun Bagan responded strongly and came close to the equalizer in the 39th minute. Dimitri Petratos delivered a teasing cross that Jason Cummings aimed at goal, but it was denied by Mumbai goalkeeper Phurba Lachenpa.

After the break, Mumbai City FC adopted a disciplined defensive approach, limiting Mohun Bagan’s chances despite continued pressure. The home side earned more than a dozen corners and several free kicks, but Mumbai’s defensive organization thwarted repeated attempts to find the net.

Mohun Bagan managed to score in the 63rd minute when Dimitri Petratos headed in a rebound. But the effort was ruled out for offside, dashing Mohun Bagan’s hopes. The home side found more space to attack after Mumbai’s main striker Pereyra Díaz limped off in the 55th minute, but the Mariners failed to capitalize.

Mumbai built an effective defensive wall that proved extremely difficult to demolish. The hosts’ repeated attempts were met with timely blocks and clearances as Mumbai showed impressive fitness by deploying extra men in defense whenever danger loomed in the box.

Despite the Mariners’ relentless pressure, the visitor held on until the final whistle to secure a crucial win mxks.
