Into Erwin – Fox’s AT Thru Hike – Day 26

I left before dark today and walked around with my headlamp to make absolutely sure I made it to the ferry. As a reward I was able to see the sunrise over the mountains. With the cold, I prefer to wait until I get some sun to start walking, but I hope the warmer weather brings more sunrises. It was only 15.8 to Spivey Gap, so leaving early should be enough time as I usually do at least two miles per hour.

So what’s the problem? Why do I need to get out of the way? It’s just rain, right? I will walk in the rain. I walk in the snow. But the forecast is not just rain. There are thunderstorms with gusts of 50 to 70 mph, followed by temperatures plummeting to 15 degrees at night. I don’t have the equipment for that. I don’t even know what the equipment for that would be. What I do know is that I wasn’t willing to risk getting soaked before temperatures dropped well below freezing.

There were a number of incredible views today and I’m glad I got here before the weather to enjoy them. The views from Big Bald are incredible. Judging by the number of day hikers without backpacks, there should be parking nearby, so I recommend it if you’re in the area. Lihat juga DiKyYl. Today the wind was blowing so hard that I had to hold my poles at an angle to stabilize myself. I’d say it was worth it even with the wind.
