A man died Saturday at Mexico City’s newly renovated Estadio Banorte after falling from a seating area, shortly before the stadium’s reopening between Mexico and Portugal. Reuters reported.
The accident reportedly occurred as the venue, known as Azteca Stadium, was hosting the warm-up match for the 2026 World Cup. The match is intended as a stress test for the facility following a 24-hour construction operation to meet Saturday’s deadline.
The stadium, which will host the opening ceremony of the World Cup on June 11, will be the first to host matches in three different World Cups.
Authorities said the man was drunk. He tried to jump from the second-level benches to the first level by climbing the outside of the building before falling to the ground floor, they said.
