Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu praised his team’s tactical flexibility after a late goal from Junya Ito secured a 1-0 win over Scotland in a pre-World Cup friendly at Hampden Park, leaving the home side to a chorus of boos.
In an important warm-up for his eighth consecutive World Cup appearance, the Samurai Blue overcame a bright start from Scotland to dominate the second half. Substitute Ito proved the difference in the 84th minute with a clinical finish from 12 yards to settle a close match.
While Scotland manager Steve Clarke admitted he was “surprised and disappointed” by the Tartan Army’s negative response, Moriyasu focused on his side’s defensive discipline and late clinical lead.

“I am very happy to play in such a fantastic atmosphere,” said Moriyasu. «It was a tough game and we managed to keep a clean sheet. Towards the end we changed the formation to score the goal. It was great for building confidence.»
The visitor survived an early scare when Zion Suzuki pushed Scott McTominay’s effort onto the post, but Japan gradually claimed control. Kodai Sano grabbed the crossbar before half-time and the pressure eventually made it clear when Ito broke through.
The result left Scotland winless in four meetings with Japan as both sides prepare for the World Cup in North America starting in June.
Japan plays against England at Wembley Stadium in London on Tuesday.
