UEFA Women’s Champions League: Lyon beats Wolfsburg to set up a semi-final against Arsenal

Lyon ran riot in extra time to beat Wolfsburg 4-0 on Thursday and advance to the semi-finals of the UEFA Women’s Champions League 4-1 on aggregate.

The French club set up a final four match with defending champion Arsenal, who advanced past Chelsea 3-2 on aggregate on Wednesday, despite a 0-1 defeat at Stamford Bridge.

Wolfburg had arrived in south-east France with a 1-0 lead in the first leg, thanks to Dutch striker Lineth Beerensteyn’s goal in Germany.

But eight-time winners Lyon dominated, with American midfielder Lily Yohannes opening the scoring after 16 minutes when the 18-year-old’s deflected strike found the bottom left corner.

The French side had defeated Wolfsburg 3-1 in the league stage, but the Germans, who won the Champions League twice in 2013 and 2014, held on despite constant pressure from the home side.

Lyon goalkeeper Christiane Endler did well to deny Janou Levels, Wolfsburg’s best chance from close range after 78 minutes.

Wolfsburg goalkeeper Stina Johannes also had a solid encounter with a Melchie Dumornay goal attempt in the 93rd minute, sending the match into extra time.

Lyon, looking to win the title for the first time since 2022, then took control and its substitutes proved decisive.

Dumornay scored from close range after 102 minutes, while Damaris Egurrola hit her head in Selma Bacha’s corner five minutes later.

Tabitha Chawinga added a fourth after 119 minutes.
