Bama to Baxter, Day 27: Almost to Amicalola Falls State Park

Last night was probably my best night’s sleep all month. I don’t know why, but I slept all night. While my scheduled day today had low mileage, there were a lot of steep climbs, so I deliberately kept the mileage short. The hike from the campground to the trailhead was about a half mile. I left camp at seven and was hiking the trail at 7:15. Lihat juga Click3here. Honestly, today I tried hard to slow down my effort on the climbs. I simply took my time today. I had two big climbs before lunch and seemed to be sucking in water, so after five hours I stopped at a campsite with a spring for a break. Luckily for me, the spring was easily accessible. I filled my bottles and climbed back to where I had kept my backpack. There was a nice fallen log there, so I had a good place to sit while I ate lunch.

According to FarOut, I had one more minor climb before things leveled out and finally turned downhill to take me to my campsite for the night. Those last few hours were an easy walk. For the past few days, I’ve had to switch between the Appalachian Trail and Benton Mackay Trail maps on FarOut to figure out the best places to camp and get water. Turns out my campsite was near a pretty famous trail on the AT that leads to the trail’s first attraction: Long Creek Falls. After setting up camp, I decided to hike to the falls so I wouldn’t have to break up my hike on the AT for a few days. There were a lot of people walking towards the falls, but many of them didn’t have backpacks. Later in the afternoon I discovered that there is a forest service road with a parking area about a mile away from the straight trail.

I cleaned up a bit at the foot of the falls and returned to my camp, where I tried to take a nap. I didn’t make it, but it was nice to lie down for a while at five in the afternoon. I left my tent and prepared dinner. I sent a message to my wife. I prepared my gear for tomorrow morning and around 6:30 pm, I climbed into my sleeping bag, hoping to get a restful night’s sleep for my big day tomorrow. Yes, if everything goes as planned, I will arrive at Amicalola State Park tomorrow afternoon.

Happy trails. . .
