Fans are allowed to bring bottles of water to the stadium for some of the matches at the European Championship for Women, which will start on Wednesday, because a heat wave has sent temperatures in Switzerland to more than 30 degrees Celsius (86 ° F).
The European football management body UEFA said on Tuesday that the normally strict security rules would be relaxed to take fans on the first two days (2 and 3 July) of Euro 2025 to bring a half-liter plastic or aluminum water bottle to the stadium. No glass bottles are allowed.
The usual circumstances that have been attached to Euro 2025 tickets state that no «bottles, jugs or cans of any kind, as well as other objects made of plastic, glass or other fragile materials» can be brought to one of the stadiums, with exceptions made for medical containers.
According to the meteorological service MeteoswissThe temperature in Basel is expected to reach 35 degrees for the opening match of Switzerland against Norway on Wednesday evening, with similar temperatures that are expected throughout the country.
«We want you to feel safe during the euro of women, so that you can fully enjoy your tournament experience, even when high temperatures struck,» UEFA said in a statement on their website and advised fans to stay in the shade and keep themselves hydrated.
UEFA competitive rules also allow cooling breaks during the games if the temperatures are more than 35 degrees Celsius, where referees can also use their discretion.
The four games where fans are allowed to bring water bottles are Iceland against Finland (July 2, Thun), Switzerland against Norway (July 2, Basel), Belgium v Italy (July 3, Sion) and Spain v Portugal (July 3, Bern).
