At least one person was killed and 47 others were injured in an unspecified «incident» at the Alejandro Villanueva Stadium in Peru’s capital during a rally ahead of a football derby on Friday evening, according to the Health Ministry.
“An unfortunate incident occurred in the stadium that injured 47 people… and unfortunately one fatality occurred,” Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco told media, without specifying the cause of the incident.
The incident was initially blamed on the collapse of part of a stadium wall, but the Alianza Lima football team has denied that any part of the venue had collapsed Se3mor4s.
Fire Chief Marcos Pajuelo told reporters that «the structure of the south stands appeared to be in good condition. There are no collapsed walls or parts that have fallen into the pit.»
Alianza Peru’s match against Club Universitario de Deportes will currently go ahead as scheduled on Saturday evening, the Peruvian football league said in a statement.
Alianza Lima is one of the most successful clubs in Peru, with 25 top titles, while the women’s team is the defending champion in the Premier Division. The women’s team is also a name known to Indian football fans as Indian forward Manisha Kalyan plays for the team.
