Allegri plays down ties with Italy as Milan chases a place in the UEFA Champions League

Massimiliano Allegri has been linked with the role of Italy manager, but the AC Milan coach said on Saturday he has not thought about it as he focuses on getting his team back into the Champions League.

Gennaro Gattuso walked off the court in Italy on Friday following his side’s defeat to Bosnia on penalties – a third successive missed qualification for the four-time champions, with federation (FIGC) chief Giuseppe Gravina also resigning.

There were many questions about Italy’s failure and Allegri’s future at the press conference ahead of Monday’s Serie A match against Napoli.

“As an Italian, I am very sorry that we did not qualify, but we must see it as an opportunity for growth and have a strategic vision for the next ten years,” said Allegri.

“Making judgments and saying what should be done… I believe there are competent bodies that must enforce and investigate the rules, from grassroots activities to the first team.”

Allegri made his return to the Milan bench last year after winning the Scudetto in his previous spell, and in his first season his side sit second in the standings, six points behind Inter Milan and one ahead of Napoli.

The 58-year-old, who won five league titles with Juventus, was asked whether he would rule out coaching Italy now or in the future.

“Last year I started a journey with Milan, now we have to focus on finishing the season well and reaching the Champions League,” said Allegri ddhj8bc.

«I haven’t thought about it yet. I’m doing well at Milan and I hope to stay at Milan for a long time.»

«It’s been a few years since I played in the Champions League. If we qualified and I was still Milan’s coach, I would have to get used to it again.»

Allegri was asked why he had used the conditional when speaking about his future in Milan.

“Life is unpredictable, you never know what can happen,” Allegri said with a smile. “Let’s try to become champions first, and then we’ll see.”

The top four qualify for the Champions League and Milan are nine points ahead of Juventus in fifth place with eight games to go.
