PSV captain Jerdy Schouten suffered a cruciate ligament injury in the match against Utrecht that required surgery, his club said on Sunday, ruling the Dutch midfielder out of the World Cup.
Schouten suffered the injury in the second half of Saturday’s 4-3 win when he twisted his knee and the 29-year-old was taken off the pitch on a stretcher.
PSV said further examinations on Sunday confirmed the injury, which typically takes six to nine months for full recovery.
“When it happened, I immediately felt that something was wrong,” says Schouten nczw.
«You still have a glimmer of hope that things will not be too bad, but unfortunately that has not turned out to be the case. The blow is now big, but I will move on quickly.»
“Beautiful things are about to happen again for PSV and I will do everything I can to be involved in everything.”
Schouten has played forty games for PSV in all competitions this season, including 28 league games, bringing them closer to a third title in a row.
After his international debut in 2022, Schouten made 17 appearances for the Netherlands, including playing the full 90 minutes in a friendly draw against Ecuador last week.
