FIFA adds new, even more expensive World Cup ticket categories

FIFA has added new, even more expensive tickets for this year’s World Cup, charging up to $4,105 (INR 3.80 lakh) for a Tier 1 seat at the US opener against Paraguay in Inglewood, California, on June 12.

Last week, FIFA had asked for a top price of $2,735 (INR 2.54 lakh) for Category 1 tickets for the match but added new prices for the “first category”.

FIFA also added an initial Category 2 tier to its ticketing website without public announcement, charging $1,940 (INR 1.80 lakh) to $2,330 (INR 2.16 lakh) for those tickets for the US opener. The new categories were first reported on Thursday by The Athletics.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in 16 cities in the US, Mexico and Canada.

The football governing body, in its information on ticket products and categories dated September 9, had referred to category 1 as “the best priced seats, mainly located in the lower level”, but appears to have withheld some seats from that category. It had labeled Category 2 as “positioned outside Category 1 areas, available in both lower and higher tiers.” FIFA did not respond to an email sent to its media office seeking comment.

FIFA has added seats for up to $3,360 (INR 3.11 lakh) in the Forward Category 1 for Canada’s opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 in Toronto.

For the round of 16 matches, it added $905 (INR) seats in Philadelphia.

FIFA last week raised the highest ticket price for the World Cup finals to $10,990 (INR 10.18 lakh) during the problem-hindered reopening of sales. The price was $8,680 (INR 8.05 lakh) when FIFA sold tickets after the tournament draw in December.

FIFA’s Category 2 tickets for the July 19 match at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, cost $7,380 (INR 6.84 lakh), up from $5,575 (INR 5.17 lakh), and Category 3 cost $5,785 (INR 5.36 lakh), up from $4,185 (INR 3.88 lakh).

There seemed to be no tickets available for the final on Thursday on FIFA’s ticket site.
